The Black Box

150 Word Reflection

The image I have chosen from the thesis work is the watercolour image from book 1. Although the main purpose of the artwork is ultimately to portray ideas of shadows I reflected on it in its overall shape and symmetry. The work shows the reflection of the main image, which indirectly reflected the overall shape of my design. Both scientists' working space have some kind of increasing block like tower shape. I attempted to mirror the shape of the 2 work spaces from the meeting point in a similar way to the artwork. Obviously they are not direct mirror images of each other and the overall shape isn't exactly symmetrical I believe an overall feel of symmetry is still present. This, again I believe, gives a greater connection and flow between the entire space as opposed to having 2 very different workspaces with no correlation within the design.

FINAL SUBMISSION

Above Ground - The above ground building was designed based on the word 'separated' from Tracey Moffat's "Something More". I created the studio specifically to be very obviously separated from ground level and quite disjointed in the way it was structurally kept above ground using the 5 'legs' that intersect above the studio. The interior of the building provides Moffat with ample space to conduct her photography with the ability to set up quite large sets and individual spaces for her work. Furthermore the unique shape of the building provides for an interesting working space and possibly a source of inspiration.

Gallery Space - In the gallery space I attempted to find a union between both studios: 'spectrum' and 'separated'. The use of many disjointed components I felt emphasised the separated context of the above ground space while the vast number of components emphasised more a spectrum of shapes, materials and contours. The final design changed quite dramatically from the original as there didn't seem too much of a connection between the two studios and the gallery space, neither really flowed into each other very well. Furthermore the original design wouldn't have allowed for the optimal use of space. By opening it up completely through the use of glass and making it an outdoor gallery I think the entire structure comes together much more effectively as a whole whilst also creating a gallery space that is much more approachable.

Below Ground - As stated above the below ground space was based on the word 'spectrum'. I approached this in 2 main ways, an obvious spectrum of colours and a spectrum of textures on an interior feature wall. The stairs connecting the gallery space and the below ground studio generally represent the wave that is constantly associated with a spectrum of colours. By painting an actual rainbow on the bottom face of the winding stairs I believe the whole idea of a wave of colours come to life within this building. Furthermore on the first level of the Below Ground studio a working space is easily set up underneath the stairs which could provide the artist (Rosalie Gascoigne) with much inspiration for her vibrant works. This is similarly done in the adjacent feature wall with a number of material and painted textures. The glass especially provides as texture of the underground contrasting very heavily with the rest of the wall. Overall the studio again provides the artist with much working space and an interesting environment with which to be inspired in.

Original Sketch - Truthfully this original sectional design came from the above ground and below ground of 2 separate ideas. I believe that both individually were my strongest designs and placed together worked much more effectively than with the opposite space that each pre-existed with. I changed the above ground simply by adding the 5 'legs' of the design as I wanted it to quite a bit above ground (and also I had not left any room for a gallery space). I also originally wanted a more mosaic type texture on the outside of the studio which changed quite drastically to roof tiles. However I believe the chosen roof tiles integrate with the materials of the rest of the structure much more effectively than giant mosaics would.

The Below Ground studio stayed pretty much exactly as seen in the original sketch down to the shape of the various textures on the wall. For this design I believe that the lack of changes didn't hinder it at all and came out quite successful especially in relation to the original sketch.
