STAIRS

Stairs Connecting Gallery and Above Ground:

These stairs followed on from the theme of 'separated' through the separation of each individual step into smaller components. The original design of the actual steps followed through to final production however the design of the balustrades changed quite dramatically. The original balustrades when placed with the entire model looked quite chunky and very out of place. The more developed ones however follow on from the idea linear wrapping seen in the gallery space which brings together the above ground and gallery space in a much more coherent way.

Stairs Connecting Gallery and Below Ground:

The stairs in the below ground studio again follow on from the theme of a 'spectrum'. Their shape symbolises and reflects the wave generally associated with a wave of colours in the spectrum. I didn't put balustrades in simply because I thought it would complicate the stairs too much and also I believe the stairs would appear aesthetically better without a hand rail.

YOUTUBE VIDEO

This video relates back to the word used in my sketchup design 'spectrum'. It shows a spectrum of colours, patterns, shapes and images which can be seen as pretty similar to my overall design. Also at about 30 seconds into the clip all the moving cubes and lines reminded me so intensely of all the sketchup functions and tediously creating my studio designs.

MATERIALS AND PRODUCTION

Fiona Hall – “Nelumbo Nucifera; Nelum (Sinhala); Thamareri (Tamil), lotus” (1999)

Fiona Hall’s ‘Lotus’ image is a series of 3 similar works part of an exhibition entitled 'Paradisus Terrestris'. Each image shows a half opened sardine can exposing a protruding naked body part and various sprouting flora. The exhibition delves into the idea of paradise on Earth and the relationship between nature and culture. In terms of materials, the sardine cans are simply regular aluminium sardine cans recycled in Sri Lanka while the rest of the artwork is made with a combination of aluminium and steel. The artwork was produced through painstakingly accurate carving and engraving, especially that of the body part and flora. The result of the materials and process used shows a mechanic yet down to earth and meaningful artwork.

Tracey Moffat “Something More #1” (1989)

This photograph by Tracey Moffat is the first in a series of 9 entitled ‘Something More’. The series shows the hopes and dreams of a girl desperately wanting to escape her current life. The actual photograph is printed on Ilfochrome (previously known as Cibachrome); a material known for its image clarity and environmental safety. However in the production of the image a staged set was used. Firstly the costumes of each “character” in the shot emphasise and indicate their role in the narrative. Secondly, various props, such as wooden crates and dried out plant life set the scene clearly in rural Australia. And lastly the painted backdrop gives the entire image depth while highlighting the scene with vibrant colours. Each of these main features of production is what enabled Moffat to create a scene so vibrant and capturing.

images

creative work from high school.

For those people who aren't the biggest Transformers fans this image is of Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots. I drew this as a gift for someone over many late nights spent watching the movie. Like probably a lot of people in the course I did not do any "conventional" arty subjects but drew this in my own free time.

great piece of architecture.

This image is of the National Theatre in Okinawa designed by Shin Takamatsu. I believe it is a great piece of architecture because of its unique and individual style. The facade portrays an image of creativity and simplicity whilst also being functional in providing a large amount of lighting for the inside of the structure. It stands out amongst the flat and empty space around it.

something beautiful.

This photograph is of the Leshan Giant Buddha in China. The 71m tall Buddha was carved straight out of the mountain face of Mount Emei. To get an idea of the enormity of the statue, the big toe seen in the bottom left corner of the picture is taller than any person. The coils on its head would be bigger than a person curled up in a ball. I believe this is something beautiful because of the huge amount of devotion and courage it took to create something so breathtaking.
